what a wonderful world

I was thinkin' today as I was singing my way back to Calgary from Medicine Hat - that my friend made up her own version of "What a Wonderful World" on a demo tape once; she was applying to get on the Nashville Network's You can Be a Star (back in 92 or so) and recorded her version of the song with the following lyrics... she got on the show - but the story still makes me laugh...

I see trees of green
Clouds of white
the bright blessed day
the dogs say good night
and I think to myself, what a wonderful world.

I gotta get a t-shirt.
my dog hardly ever says good night.

Medicine HAT

I had the best time today- just amazing! First of all I had breakfast with Seana - always a treat to see you...thank you for your support.

And secondly - Thank you to the Women in Business of Medicine Hat...what a hoot! I love gathering with like-minded folks just for the sake of a well-deserved laugh. Thank you for the Medicine HAT - yes, I've been hatted in the Hat. I'll be back soon!

and for those who are dying to know my head is the exact same size as Rick Mercer's head - how do I know that - because I arranged for him to be white hatted in Calgary when he received the 30th Annual Bob Edwards Award from ATP... and we're the exact same height.

top reasons you, as a fundraiser, gives to another organization soliciting you on the phone or at your door

  • you can never have enough of those personalized mailing labels....
  • you need a copy of their competition's brochure so that you can "study" it....
  • you're a one-person fundraising team - you could use the company

You know you're a fundraiser in Calgary when...

  • you're seriously considering calling your next child "HYATT" - but only if you can seal the deal on a sponsorship for naming rights

  • you've acknowledged the shortage of event venues by making the statement - "maybe Tuesday night's not such a bad night for a fundraiser!"

  • you read the obits first. always.

because I know Daryl will post something ...I thought I better give you my version

Allyson Smith (having attended 52 weeks out of a potential 54 weeks of comedy at Dicken's Monday Night Comedy Night) was sent off in fine fashion last night. Allyson is heading off to Vancouver to pursue her comedy career - so in an impromptu move I was asked to emcee a calvacade of well wishes and comedy from her pals...what fun

Folks it was a night filled with stories/jokes/songs/poems and more in celebration of Allyson -

We were all pure gold; magic. the funniest we've ever been. I was thrilled to be asked to MC.
my yellow raincoat rocked; presents (thank you James) were given; the "crowd" sat together and with great care I encouraged them to focus....(LOOK AT ME - pretend I'm a family of coyotes on Nose Hill Daryl - but shutup and LISTEN TO ME);I personally enjoyed taking the mickey outta Dan and I liked making up wacky introductions for all the comics -I don't think anyone can tire of hearing Chilliwack(!) or seeing A.J. shake.... and the ESL fella is nothing short of interesting...

Trent's heartfelt words of thanks to Allyson for what she's done for amateurs and comics in Calgary are shared by all of us - she's a treasure. So I guess I'm saying she's on loan to Vancouver. Don't forget that. And if you need the other female comics in Calgary - we'll be in her folks basement - on a timeshare thing - trying to soak up some of the love. and some of the funny.

Allyson is emceeing at Yuk Yuk's Calgary all the rest of the week!
Go check it out...258-2028 for tickets....give her a smooch for me.

Feed the Birds...

I did a presentation for CentrePoint's Executive Breakfast Meeting this morning called "why are we not laughing" - how to be casual and productive, relaxed and hard-working, fun and sophisticated - looking at the case for comedy in the world of fund development and non-profits ...if you were there - you can send your boss to my blogspot to explain what you were up to...or not! If you wanted more handouts/notes - you could just print this and file it under "funny".....thanks for your enthusiasm and for sharing yourselves with me this morning...

what a risk! (comedy at 7:30!) and what a joy! - in a nutshell my presentation addressed our dire need to take the mickey outta what's become a very serious serious profession - surrounded by professionals with letters after their name, lawyers, insurance agents, government officials, sponsors, canada revenue rules and regulations - we tend to keep a very stiff upper lip -

so we talked about why we can't afford to not laugh. Depression alone surpasses heart disease as the country's leading cause of disability. we need to slow down and listen. breathe. laugh. - for our immune systems, our blood pressure, our cardiovascular effects - to relieve stress and lift our spirits. to connect us with one another!

  • we ran through a few laughter yoga techniques;
  • I did some of my routine;
  • we talked about resistance to change;
  • how we've isolated ourselves;
  • how we all split the world into us/them (read Oprah's magazine article, November 2005 called "We're All in the Band");
  • we talked about our formal attire (the current ad on TV selling rum - where the Jamaicans are telling us it's a good thing they didn't react to the world as stiffly as the rest of us);
  • we talked about being bottom-line and loving pies/charts when we should be anything but bottom-line;
  • that we have relationships with board, ceo, staff, government, donors, foundations, corporations, media, financial institutions, development committees, volunteers, consultants and othe organizations and STILL no one knows what we're up to - so we feel a lack of suport, a lack of communtication, a lack of appreciation and specific stresses like competition;
  • we talked about the fact that we have our own lexicon and that separates us from others;
  • I told the only jokes I knew or could find in my research about fund development;
  • we wrote jokes about either "the reason you give to organizations other than your own" or "You know you're a fundraiser in Calgary when..." - with lots of laugh as our reward!
  • We looked at why humour is like asking for a big gift
  • we talked about how within the room there were folks we'd seen countless times and yet we know very little about them - not many know I'm a comic - some one else might tapdance, play the violin - and I told them that my partner Mooky Cornish (acclaimed clown, Cirque du Soleil/Pickle Circus/Dell'Arte School) and I were going to travel from community to community with a new concept called SHOW ME YOURS - inviting folks to share those dreams and their talents in a travelling talent show format...

and I concluded with my notion of the world of fund development and Mary Poppins. We hang out with folks who "feed the birds" - they put their money into hope, and possibility and let it fly away to do great things - they relate to magic, humour, the sense of play and joy and creativity. They have the potential to laugh so hard they float to the ceiling, during tea.

and we all left. with smiles. to feed the birds.

you ever have a notion in your noggin
and then you meet someone
and they've had the same notion in their noodle
and
all of sudden
it's happening

I think I need
to rest up
the joy
just hit

my left foot ....

I have a sore foot.

yesterday, as I was feeling sorry for myself after having lumbered around for a week - hopping/propping/mostly stopping and feeling like a stumpy lumpy woman with a pissy look on her face... I looked down at my sad left foot - wrapped in swaddling, dirty little dusty bandages (tensor cloth)...and said

"my foot looks like it should be starring in Les Mis."

happy school's almost out!

our kids spent 2 days in their suits this weekend waiting for their 13' x 30inch "congratulationsonanothergoodschoolyearpresent" to fill...

and then the water was so cold...how cold was it?
  • a real-life march of the penguins ensued.
  • we chopped the ice off the top so that the cows could have a drink.
  • witches tits' seemed warm and fuzzy in comparison...

and today

it's cloudy.

social networking

I've thrown my hat in the social networking ring...
http://myspace.com/corymack

and many questions arise:
  • is this where the saying "friends are just people you haven't met yet"
    was written?
  • is it worth the fun/effort/keystrokes?
  • what did I do with my time before the internet?
